Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead — You Can!
September is North Carolina Preparedness Month
Natural disasters can strike anytime. North Carolina faces hurricanes in late summer and fall, tornadoes in spring and late fall, winter storms from December to March, and severe weather year-round. Emergencies can also come from chemical spills, public disturbances, or other unexpected events.
Are you ready? Haywood County Health Department encourages all residents to take steps to protect their families by preparing now.
Four Easy Steps to Prepare:
Make a Plan — Decide where to go, how to communicate, and include special needs for seniors, people with disabilities, and pets.
Discuss and Practice Your Plan — Review your plan with everyone in your household and run drills.
Build an Emergency Kit — Pack essentials like non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person per day for 3-7 days), first aid supplies, medications, copies of important documents, flashlights, batteries, weather radio, cash, and pet supplies.
Stay Informed — Know your local risks and listen to local media and emergency alerts during severe weather.
Remember: Review and update your plan regularly. Practice it now so you won’t be caught off guard later.
