Examples of eligible individuals:
An individual who has been terminated or laid off
A self-employed worker who has been affected by economic conditions in the community
Contractors or workers who have been affected by a significant economic disruption in the community
An individual previously laid-off who has taken a "stop-gap" job with a lower salary than their previous position
A family member who was dependent on the income of a dislocated worker in their household and is unemployed or underemployed
An individual who has been unemployed for more than 13 weeks
The program is a joint effort between Mountain Projects, United Way of Haywood County, Haywood County government, and funding support from Dogwood Health Trust. Any former mill workers, or those downsized in other businesses because of the Pactiv Evergreen closure, can receive assistance from Mountain Projects' certified application counselors to help find healthcare coverage that's right for them and their family members. Workers may also receive up to $500 per family member per month as reimbursement for health insurance premiums.
Haywood Community College has established a scholarship for 2023 mill employees. The scholarship offers financial assistance for those looking to return to the classroom. The Community College provides various short-term workforce training options, certificates, and diplomas.
